The Gospel of St. John

The 1st Chapter

In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God: and the word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him, nothing was made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men, and the light shines in the darkness, but the darkness comprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came as a witness to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light: but came to bear witness of the light. That light was the true light, which lights all men that come into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him: and yet the world knew him not.

He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them he gave power to be the sons of God in that they believed on his name: which were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh, nor yet of the will of man: but of God.

And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw the glory of it, as the glory of the only begotten son of the father full of grace and truth.

John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, "He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fullness have all we received, even grace for grace." For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man has seen God at any time. The only begotten son, which is in the bosom of the father, he has declared him.

And this is the record of John: When the Jews sent Priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, what are you? He confessed and denied not and said plainly: I am not Christ. And they asked him: what then? Are you Elijah? And he said: I am not. are you that Prophet? And he answered no. Then they said unto him: what are you that we may give an answer to them that sent us: What say you of your self? He said: I am the voice of a crier in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as Isaiah the Prophet said.

And they which were sent, were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him: why then do you baptize if you are not Christ, nor Elijah , neither a Prophet? John answered them saying: I baptize with water: but one is come among you, whom you know not, he it is that comes after me, which was before me, whose shoe latches I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan where John did baptize.

The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said: behold the lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said. After me comes a man, which was before me, for he was before me, and I knew him not: but that he should be declared to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

And John bare record saying: I saw the spirit descend from heaven, like unto a dove and abide upon him, and I knew him not. But he that sent me to baptize in water, the same said unto me: upon whom you shall see the spirit descend on him and tarry, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost. And I saw and bare record that this is the son of God.

The next day after, John stood again, and two of his disciples. And he beheld Jesus as he walked by, and said: behold the lamb of God. And the two disciples heard him speak and followed Jesus. And Jesus turned about, and saw them follow, and said unto them: What seek ye? They said unto him: Rabbi (which is to say by interpretation, Master) where do you dwell? He said unto them: come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt: and abode with him that day. For it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two which heard John speak and followed Jesus, was Andrew Simon Peters brother. The same found his brother Simon first, and said unto him: we have found Messias, which is by interpretation, anointed: and brought him to Jesus. And Jesus beheld him and said: you are Simon the son of Jonas, you shall be called Cephas: which is by interpretation, a stone.

The day following Jesus would go into Galilee, and found Philip, and said unto him, follow me. Philip was of Bethsaida the city of Andrew and Peter. And Philip found Nathanael, and said unto him. We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the Prophets did write. Jesus of Nazareth the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said unto him: can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him: come and see.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him. Behold a right Israelite, in whom is no guile. Nathanael said unto him: how did you know me? Jesus answered, and said unto him: Before that Philip called you, when you was under the fig tree, I saw you. Nathanael answered and said unto him: Rabbi, you are the son of God, you are the king of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him: Because I said unto you, I saw you under the fig tree, you believe. You shall see greater things than these. And he said unto him: Truly, truly, I say unto you: hereafter shall you see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending over the son of man.

The 2nd Chapter

And the third day, was there a marriage in Cana a city of Galilee: and the mother of Jesus was there. And Jesus was called also and his disciples unto the marriage. And when the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said unto him: they have no wine. Jesus said unto her: woman, what have I to do with you? Mine hour is not yet come. His mother said unto the ministers: whatsoever he says unto you, do it. And there were standing there, six water pots of stone after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins (small barrel) apiece.

And Jesus said unto them: fill the water pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he said unto them: draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was turned unto wine, and knew not from where it was (but the ministers which drew the water knew). He called the bridegroom, and said unto him: all men at the beginning set forth good wine, and when men be drunk, then that which is worse. But you have kept back the good wine, until now.

This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and showed his glory and his disciples believed on him. After that he descended into Capernaum, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: but continued not many days there.

And the Jews Passover was even at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and found those sitting in the temple that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and changers of money. And he made a scourge of small cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen, and poured out the changer’s money, and overthrew the tables, and said unto them that sold doves: Take these things away, and make not my fathers house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered, how that it was written: The zeal of your house has consume me.

Then answered the Jews and said unto him: what sign do you show us, seeing that you do these things? Jesus answered and said unto them: destroy this temple, and in three days I will rear it up again. Then said the Jews: forty six years was this temple a building: and will you rear it up in three days? But he spoke of the temple of his body. As soon therefore as he was risen from death again, his disciples remembered that he thus said. And they believed the scripture, and the words which Jesus had spoken.

When he was at Jerusalem at Passover in the feast, many believed on his name, when they saw his miracles which he did. But Jesus put not himself in their hands, because he knew all men, and needed not, that any man should testify of him. For he knew what was in man.

The 3rd Chapter

There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler among the Jews. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him. Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher which are come from God. For no man could do such miracles as you do, except God were with him.

Jesus answered and said unto him: Truly, truly I say unto you: except a man be born a new, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus said unto him: how can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter into his mothers womb and be born again?

Jesus answered: truly, truly I say unto you: except that a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh: and that which is born of the spirit, is spirit. Marvel not that I said to you, you must be born a new. The wind blows where he lists, and you hear his sound: but can not tell from where he comes and where he goes. So is every man that is born of the spirit.

And Nicodemus answered and said unto him: how can these things be?

Jesus answered and said unto him: Are you a master in Israel, and know not these things? Truly, truly, I say unto you, we speak that we know, and testify that we have seen: and you receive not our witness. If when I tell you earthly things, you believe not: how should you believe, if I shall tell you of heavenly things? And no man ascends up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, that is to say, the son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lift up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lift up, that none that believes in him perish: but have eternal life.

For God so loves the world, that he has given his only son, that none that believe in him, should perish: but should have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world, to condemn the world: but that the world through him might be saved. He that believes on him, shall not be condemned. But he that believes not, is condemned all ready, because he believes not in the name of the only son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and the men loved darkness more than light, because their deeds were evil. For every man that does evil, hates the light: neither comes to light least his deeds should be reproved. But he that does truth, comes to the light that his deeds might be known, how that they are wrought in God.

After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the Jews land, and there he continued with them and baptized. And John also baptized in Anon near to Salem, because there was much water there, and they came and were baptized. For John was not yet cast into prison.

And there arose a question between Johns disciples and the Jews about purifying. And they came unto John, and said unto him: Rabbi, he that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bare witness. Behold the same baptizes, and all men come to him.

John answered, and said: a man can receive nothing at all except it be given him from heaven. you yourselves are witnesses, how that I said: I am not Christ, but am sent before him. He that has the bride, is the bridegroom. But the friend of the bridegroom, which stands by and hears him, rejoices greatly of the bridegrooms voice. This my joy is fulfilled. He must increase: and I must decrease.

He that comes from an high is above all: He that is of the earth, is earthly, and speaks of the earth. He that comes from heaven, is above all, and what he has seen and heard: that he testifies: but no man receives his testimony. How be it, he that has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true. For he whom God has sent, speaks the words of God. For God gives not the spirit by measure (unto him). The father loves the son and has given all things into his hand. He that believes on the son, has everlasting life: and he that believes not the son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

The 4th Chapter

As soon as the Lord had knowledge, how the Pharisees had heard, that Jesus made and baptized more disciples then John (though that Jesus himself baptized not: but his disciples) he left Judea, and departed again in to Galilee. And it was so that he must needs go through Samaria. Then came he to a city of Samaria called Sychar, besides the possession that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. And there was Jacob’s well. Jesus then wearied in his journey, thus sat on the well. And it was about the sixth hour: and there came a woman of Samaria to draw water. And Jesus said unto her: give me drink. For his disciples were gone away unto the town to buy meat. Then said the woman of Samaria unto him: how is it, that you being a Jew, ask drink of me, which am a Samaritan? for the Jews meddle not with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her: if you knew the gift of God, and who it is that says to you give me drink, you would have asked of him, and he would have given you water of life. The woman said unto him. Sir you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from where then have you that water of life? Are you greater then our father Jacob which gave us the well, and he himself drank thereof, and his children, and his cattle?

Jesus answered and said unto her: whosoever drinks of this water, shall thirst again. But whosoever shall drink of the water that I shall give him, shall never more thirst: but the water that I shall give him, shall be in him a well of water, springing up into everlasting life.

The woman said unto him: Sir give me of that water, that I thirst not, neither come here to draw. Jesus said unto her. Go and call your husband, and come here. The woman answered and said to him: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: You have well said, I have no husband. For you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have, is not your husband. That you said truly.

The woman said unto him: Sir I perceive that you are a Prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain: and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus said unto her: woman believe me, the hour comes, when you shall neither in this mountain nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the father. you worship you know not what: we know what we worship. For salvation comes of the Jews. But the hour comes and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the father in spirit, and in truth. For truly the father requires such worship. God is a spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him, in spirit and truth.

The woman said unto him: I know well Messias shall come, which is called Christ. When he is come, he will tell us all things: Jesus said unto her: I that speak unto you am he. And even at that point came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman. Yet no man said unto him: what mean you, or why talk you with her? The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and said to the men. Come see a man which told me all things that ever I did. Is not he Christ? Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

And in the mean while his disciples prayed him saying: Master, eat. He said unto them: I have meat to eat, that you know not of. Then said the disciples between themselves: has any man brought him meat? Jesus said unto them: my meat is to do the will of him that sent me. And to finish his work. Say not there are yet four months, and then comes harvest? Behold I say unto you, lift up your eyes, and look on the regions: for they are white already unto harvest. And he that reaps receives reward, and gathers fruit unto life eternal: that both he that sows, and he that reaps might rejoice together. And herein is the saying true, that one sows, and another reaps. I sent you to reap that whereon you bestowed no labor. Other men laboured, and you are entered into their labors.

Many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him, for the saying of the woman, which testified: he told me all things that I ever did. Then when the Samaritans were come unto him they besought him, that he would tarry with them. And he abode there two days. And many more believed because of his own words, and said unto the woman: Now we believe not because of your saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is even indeed Christ the saviour of the world.

After two days he departed from that place, and went away into Galilee. And Jesus himself testified, that a Prophet has no honour in his own country. Then as soon as he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him which had seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast. For they went also unto the feast day. And Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he turned water into wine.

And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capernaum. As soon as he heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him, that he would go down, and heal his son: For he was even ready to die. Then said Jesus unto him: except you see signs and wonders, you cannot believe. The ruler said unto him: Sir come away or ere that my child die. Jesus said unto him: Go your way, your son lives. And the man believed the words that Jesus had spoken unto him, and went his way. And at once as he went on his way, his servants met him, and told him saying: your child lives. Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him: the seventh hour, the fever left him. And the father knew that it was the same hour in which Jesus said unto him: your son lives. And he believed, and all his household. This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, after he was come out of Judea into Galilee.

The 5th Chapter

After that there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And there is at Jerusalem, by the slaughterhouse, a pool called in the Hebrew tongue, Bethesda, having five porches, in which lay a great multitude of sick folk, of blind, halt and withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool and troubled the water. Whosoever then first after the stirring of the water, stepped in, was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had been diseased thirty eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he now long time had been diseased, he said unto him, Will you be made whole? The sick answered him: Sir I have no man when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool. But in the mean time, while I am about to come, another steps down before me.

And Jesus said unto him: rise, take up your bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and went. And the same day was the Sabbath day. The Jews therefore said unto him that was made whole: It is the Sabbath day, it is not lawful for you to carry your bed. He answered them: he that made me whole, said unto me: take up your bed, and get you from here, now. Then asked they him: what man is that which said unto you, take up your bed and walk? And he that was healed, knew not who it was. For Jesus had gotten himself away, because that there was press of people in the place.

After that, Jesus found him in the temple, and said unto him: behold you are made whole, sin no more, least a worse thing happen unto you. The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought the means to slay him, because he had done these things on the Sabbath day. And Jesus answered them: my father works here to, and I work. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, not only because he had broken the Sabbath: but said also that God was his father and made himself equal with God.

Then Jesus answered and said unto them: truly, truly, I say unto you: the son can do nothing of him self, but that he sees the father do. For what ever the Father does, that the son does also. For the father loves the son, and shows him everything that he himself does. And he will show him greater works than these, because you should marvel. For likewise as the father raises up the dead, and quickens them, even so the son quickens whom he will.

The father judges no man: but has committed all judgment unto the son, so that all men should honour the son, even as they honour the father. He that honors not the son, the same honors not the father which has sent him. Truly, truly I say unto you: He that hears my words, and believes on him that sent me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into damnation: but is escaped from death unto life.

Truly, truly I say unto you: the time shall come, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God. And they that hear, shall live. For as the father has life in him self, so likewise has he given to the son to have life in him self: and has given him power also to judge, in that he is the son of man. Marvel not at this: the hour shall come in the which all that are in the graves, shall hear his voice, and shall come forth: they that have done good unto the resurrection of life: and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

I can of mine own self do nothing at all. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the father which has sent me. If I bear witness of my self, my witness is not true. There is another that bears witness of me, and I am sure that the witness which he bears of me, is true.

You sent unto John, and he testified unto the truth. But my testimony does not come from man. (Nevertheless, these things I say, that you might be saved. John was a burning, and a shining light, and you for a season rejoiced in his light.) But I have a greater witness than the witness of John. For the works which the father has given me to finish: the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the father sent me. And the father himself which has sent me, bears witness of me. You have not heard his voice at any time, nor have you seen his shape, and you have not his words abiding in you. For he whom the father has sent: you do not believe.

Search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are the ones that testify of me. And yet you will not come to me, that you might have life. I receive not praise of men. But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you. I am come in my fathers name, and you receive me not. If another shall come in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, you which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that comes only of God?

Do not think that I will accuse you to my father. There is one that accuses you: even Moses in whom you trust. For had you believed Moses, you would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But seeing you believe not his writing: how shall you believe my words?

The 6th Chapter

After these things Jesus went his way over the sea of Galilee near to a city called Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they had seen his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And Passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, and said unto Philip: from where shall we buy bread that these might eat? This he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

Philip answered him, two hundred penny worth of bread are not sufficient for them, that every man have a little. Then Andrew Simon Peters brother, one of his disciples, said unto him. There is a lad here, which has five barley loaves and two fishes: but what is that among so many? And Jesus said: Make the people sit down: There was much grass in the place. And the men sat down, in number, about five thousand. And Jesus took the bread, and gave thanks and gave to the disciples, and his disciples to them that were set down. And he gave likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

When they had eaten enough he said unto his disciples, gather up the broken meat that remains: that nothing be lost. And they gathered it together, and filled twelve baskets with the broken meat, of the five barley loaves: which remained unto them that had eaten.

Then the men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said: This is of a truth the Prophet that should come into the world. When Jesus perceived that they would come, and take him up, to make him king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

And when evening was come his disciples went unto the sea and entered into a ship and went over the sea unto Capernaum. And before long it was dark, and Jesus was not come to them. And the sea arose with a great wind that blew. And when they had rowed about a twenty five or a thirty furlongs, they saw Jesus walk on the sea, and draw near unto the ship, and they were afraid. And he said unto them: It is I, be not afraid. Then would they have received him into the ship, and the ship was by and by at the land whither they went.

The day following, the people which stood on the other side of the sea, saw that there was no other ship there, save that one wherein his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not in with his disciples into the ship: but that his disciples were gone away alone. How be it, there came other ships from Tiberias near unto the place, where they ate bread, when the Lord had blessed. Then when the people saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping and came to Capernaum seeking for Jesus.

And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him: Rabbi, when came you here? Jesus answered them and said: truly, truly I say unto you: you seek me, not because you saw the miracles: but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled. Labor not for the meat which perishes, but for the meat that endures unto everlasting life, which meat the son of man shall give unto you. For him has God the father sealed.

Then they said unto him: what shall we do that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them. This is the work of God, that you believe on him, whom he has sent. They said unto him: what sign show you then, that we may see and believe you? What do you work? Our fathers did eat Manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Jesus said unto them: truly, truly I say unto you: Moses gave you not bread from heaven: but my father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which comes down from heaven and gives life unto the world.

Then they said unto him: Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them: I am that bread of life. He that comes to me shall not hunger: and he that believes on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you: that you have seen me, and yet believe not. All that the father gives me shall come to me: and him that comes to me, I cast not away. For I came down from heaven: not to do mine own will, but his will which has sent me. And this is the fathers will which has sent me, that of all which he has given me, I should lose nothing: but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me: that every man which sees the son and believes on him, have everlasting life. And I will raise him up at the last day. The Jews then murmured at him, because he said: I am that bread which is come down from heaven. And they said: Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that he says, I came down from heaven? Jesus answered and said unto them. Murmur not between yourselves. No man can come to me except the father which has sent me, draw him. And I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets, that they shall all be taught of God. Every man therefore that has heard and has learned of the father comes unto me. Not that any man has seen the father, save he which is of God, the same has seen the father.

Truly, truly I say unto you, he that believes on me, has everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat Manna in the wilderness and are dead? This is that bread which comes from heaven that a man may eat thereof and not die. I am that living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever. And the bread that I will give, is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

And the Jews strove among themselves saying: How can this fellow give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them: Truly, truly I say unto you, except you eat the flesh of the son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. Whosoever eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, has eternal life: and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood, dwells in me and I in him. As the living father has sent me, even so live I by my father: and he that eats me shall live by me. This is the bread which came from heaven: not as your fathers have eaten Manna and are dead. He that eats of this bread, shall live ever.

These things he said in the synagogue as he taught in Capernaum. Therefore many of his disciples: when they had heard this, said: this is a hard saying: who can bear the hearing of it? Jesus knew in himself, that his disciples murmured and said unto them: does this offend you? What if you shall see the son of man ascend up where he was before?

It is the spirit that quickens, the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak unto you, are spirit and life. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning, which they were that believed not, and who should betray him. And he said: Therefore said I unto you: that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my father.

From that time many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus to the twelve: will you also go away? Then Simon Peter answered: Master to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we believe and know that you are Christ the son of the living God. Jesus answered them: Have not I chosen you twelve, and yet one of you is the devil? He spoke this of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot. For he it was that should betray him, and was one of the twelve.

The 7th Chapter

After that, Jesus went about into Galilee, and would not go about in Judea for the Jews sought to kill him. The Jews feast of tabernacles was at hand. His brethren therefore said unto him: get you from here, now and go into Judea that your disciples may see your works that you do. For there is no man that does anything secretly, and he himself seeks to be known. If you do such things, show yourself to the world. For as yet his brethren believed not in him.

Then Jesus said unto them: My time is not yet come: your time is always ready. The world cannot hate you. Me it hates: because I testify of it, that the works of it are evil. Go you up unto this feast. I will not go up yet unto this feast, for my time is not yet fully come. These words he said unto them, and abode still in Galilee. But as soon as his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast: not openly but as it were privily. Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said: Where is he? And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him. Some said: He is good. Other said no, but he deceives the people. Howbeit no man spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.

In the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. And the Jews marvelled saying: How does he know the scriptures, seeing that he never learned? Jesus answered them, and said: My doctrine is not mine: but his that sent me: If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. He that speaks of himself, seeks his own praise. But he that seeks his praise that sent him, the same is true and no unrighteousness is in him.

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you go about to kill me? The people answered and said: you have the devil: who goes about to kill you? Jesus answered and said to them: I have done one work, and you all marvel. Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision not because it is of Moses: but of the fathers: And yet you on the Sabbath day, circumcise a man. If a man on the Sabbath day receive circumcision without breaking of the law of Moses: do you disdain me, because I have made a man every bit whole on the Sabbath day? Judge not entirely after the appearance: but judge righteous judgment.

Then said some of them of Jerusalem: Is not this he whom they go about to kill? Behold he speaks boldly, and they say nothing to him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is very Christ? How be it we know this man from where he is: but when Christ comes, no man shall know from where he is.

Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught saying: you know me, and from where I am you know. And yet I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom you know not. I know him: for I am of him, and he has sent me. Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his time was not yet come. Many of the people believed on him and said: when Christ comes, will he do more miracles than this man has done?

The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things about him. Wherefore the Pharisees and high priests sent stewards forth to take him. Then said Jesus unto them: Yet am I a little while with you, and then go I unto him that sent me. you shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, over there you can not come.

Then said the Jews between themselves: whither will he go, that we shall not find him? Will he go among the gentiles which are scattered all abroad, and teach the gentiles? What manner of saying is this that he said: you shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, over there you can not come?

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried saying: If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. He that believes on me, as says the scripture out of his belly shall flow rivers of the water of life. This spoke he of the spirit which they that believed on him, should receive. For the Holy Ghost was not yet there, because that Jesus was not yet glorified.

Many of the people, when they heard this saying said: of a truth this is a prophet. Other said, this is Christ: Some asked: shall Christ come out of Galilee? Says not the scripture that Christ shall come of the seed of David: and out of the town of Bethlehem where David was? So was there dissension among the people about him. And some of them would have taken him: but no man laid hands on him.

Then the stewards came to the high priests and Pharisees. And they asked them: why have you not brought him? The stewards answered: never man spoke as this man does. Then the Pharisees answered them: are you also deceived? Do any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believe on him? The common people which know not the law are cursed.

Nicodemus said unto them: (He that came to Jesus by night, and was one of them.) Does our law judge any man before it hear him, and know what he has done? They answered and said unto him: are you also of Galilee? Search and look, for out of Galilee arises no Prophet. And every man went unto his own house.

The 8th Chapter

And Jesus went unto mount Olivet, and early in the morning came again into the temple and all the people came unto him, and he sat down and taught them. And the Scribes and the Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery, and set her in the midst and said unto him: Master, this woman was taken in adultery, even as the deed was being done. Moses in the law commanded us that such should be stoned. What do you say? And this they said to tempt him: that they might have, whereof to accuse him.

Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground. And while they continued asking him, he lifted himself up, and said unto them: let him that is among you without sin, cast the first stone at her. And again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. And as soon as they heard that, they went out one by one, the eldest first. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

When Jesus had lifted up himself again, and saw no man, but the woman, he said unto her: Woman where are your accusers? Has no man condemned you? She said: No man Lord. And Jesus said: Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more.

Then spoke Jesus again unto them saying: I am the light of the world. He that follows me, shall not walk in darkness: but shall have the light of life. The Pharisees said unto him: You bear record of your self, your record is not true. Jesus answered and said unto them: though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know from where I came and where I go. But you cannot tell from where I come and where I go. You judge after the flesh, I judge no man. And if I judge, my judgment is true. For I am not alone: but I and the father that sent me. It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. I am one that bear witness of myself, and the father that sent me, bears witness of me.

Then they said unto him: where is your father? Jesus answered: you neither know me, nor yet my father. If you had known me, you should have known my father also. These words spoke Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple, and no man laid hands on him, for his time was not yet come.

Then Jesus said again unto them: I go my way, and you shall seek me, and shall die in your sins. Where to I go, over there you can not come. Then the Jews said: will he kill himself, because he says: Where to I go, over there can you not come? And he said unto them: you are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world. Therefore, I said unto you that you shall die in your sins. For except you believe that I am he, you shall die in your sins.

Then they said unto him, who are you? And Jesus said unto them: Even that which I have spoken unto you from the beginning. I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you: and he that sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I speak unto the world.

How be it they understood not that he spoke of his father. Then Jesus said unto them: When you have lifted up the son of man, then you shall know that I am he. And that I do nothing of myself: but only as my father has taught me, even so I speak. He that sent me, is with me. The father has not left me alone, for I do always those things that please him.

As he spoke these words, many believed on him. Then Jesus said to those Jews which believed on him. If you continue in my words, then you are my disciples, and shall know the truth: and the truth shall make you free. They answered him: We are Abraham’s seed, and were never bond to any man: why do you say that you shall be made free?

Jesus answered them: Truly, truly I say unto you, that whosoever commits sin, is the servant of sin. And the servant abides not in the house forever: But the son abides forever. If the son therefore shall make you free, then are you free indeed. I know that you are Abraham’s seed: but you seek means to kill me, because my sayings have no place in you. I speak that I have seen with my father: and you do that which you have seen of your father. They answered and said unto him: Abraham is our father.

Jesus said unto them. If you were Abraham’s children you would do the deeds of Abraham. But now you go about to kill me, a man that has told you the truth which I have heard of God: Abraham did not do this but you do the deeds of your father. Then they said unto him: we were not born of fornication. We have one father, which is God. Jesus said unto them: if God were your father, then you would love me. For I proceeded forth and come from God. Neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do you not understand my words? Even because you cannot endure the hearing of my words.

You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, then he speaks of his own. For he is a liar, and the father thereof. And because I tell you the truth, therefore you believe me not.

Which of you can rebuke me for sin? If I speak the truth, why do not you believe me? He that is of God, hears Gods words. You hear them not, because you are not of God. Then the Jews answered and said unto him: Say we not well that you are a Samaritan and have the devil? Jesus answered: I have not the devil: but I honour my father, and you have dishonored me. I seek not mine own praise: but there is one that seeks and judges. Truly, truly I say unto you, if a man keep my sayings, he shall never see death.

Then the Jews said to him. Now know we that you have the devil. Abraham is dead, and also the Prophets: and yet you say, if a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. are you greater then our father Abraham, which is dead? And the Prophets are dead. Who are you making yourself?

Jesus answered: If I honour my self, mine honour is worth nothing. It is my father that honors me, which you say is your God, and you have not known him. But I know him and if I should say that I know him not, I would be a liar like unto you. But I know him and keep his saying.

Your father Abraham was glad to see my day, and he saw it and rejoiced. Then said the Jews unto him: you are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them: Truly, truly I say unto you: before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones, to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

The 9th Chapter

And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him saying. Master, who sinned that he was born blind: this man, or his father and mother. Jesus answered: Neither has this man sinned, nor his father and mother. Nevertheless, so that the works of God should be shown on him, I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day. The night comes when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

As soon as he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind, and said unto him: Go wash in the pool of Siloam, which by interpretation, signifies sent. He went his way and washed, and came again seeing. The neighbors and they that had seen him before as a beggar, said: is not this he that sat and begged? Some said: this is he. Other said: he is like him.

But he himself said: I am even he. They said unto him: How are your eyes opened then? He answered and said. The man that is called Jesus, made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me. Go to the pool Siloam and wash. I went and washed and received my sight. They said unto him: where is he? He said: I cannot tell.

Then they brought him that a little before was blind: to the Pharisees. Because, it was the Sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them: He put clay upon mine eyes and I washed, and do see. Then said some of the Pharisees: this man is not of God, because he keeps not the Sabbath day. Other said: how can a man that is a sinner, do such miracles? And there was strife among them. Then spoke they unto the blind again: What say you of him, because he has opened your eyes? And he said: He is a Prophet.

But the Jews did not believe the fellow, how that he was blind and received his sight, until they had called the father and mother of him that had received his sight. And they asked them saying: Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How does he now see? His father and mother answered them and said, we know well that this is our son, and that he was born blind: but by what means he now sees that we can not tell, or who has opened his eyes, we can not tell. He is old enough, ask him, let him answer for himself.

Such words spoke his father and mother, because they feared the Jews. For the Jews had conspired already that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his father and mother said: he is old enough, ask him.

Then again they called the man that was blind, and said unto him: Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. He answered and said: Whether he be a sinner or no, I cannot tell: One thing I am sure of, that I was blind, and now I see. Then they said to him again. What did he to you? How did he open your eyes? He answered them, I told you before and you did not listen. Why would you hear it again? Will you also be his disciples? Then they degraded him, and said: You are his disciple. We are Moses’ disciples. We are sure that God spoke with Moses. This fellow we know not from where he is.

The man answered and said unto them: this is a marvelous thing that you know not from where he is, seeing he has opened mine eyes. For we are sure that God doesn’t hear sinners. But if any man be a worshipper of God and does his will, he hears him. Since the world began it was not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. If this man were not of God, he could have done nothing. They answered and said unto him: you are altogether born in sin, and do you teach us? And they cast him out.

Jesus heard that they had excommunicated him: and as soon as he had found him, he said unto him: do you believe on the son of God? He answered and said: Who is it Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him: You have seen him, and he it is that talks with you. And he said: Lord I believe: and worshipped him. Jesus said: I am come into this world unto judgment: that they which see not, might see, and they which see, might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees which were with him, heard these words and said unto him: are we then blind? Jesus said unto them: if you were blind, you should have no sin. But now you say, we see, therefore your sin remains.

The 10th Chapter

Truly, truly I say unto you: he that enters not in by the door, into the sheepfold, but climbs up some other way: the same is a thief and a robber. He that goes in by the door, is the shepherd of the sheep: to him the porter opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out. And when he has sent forth his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but will run from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. This similitude spoke Jesus unto them. But they understood not what things they were which he spoke unto them.

Then said Jesus unto them again. Truly, truly I say unto you: I am the door of the sheep. All, even as many as came before me, are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be safe, and shall go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes not but for to steal, kill and destroy. I am come that they might have life, and have it more abundantly.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. An hired servant, which is not the shepherd, neither the sheep are his own, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep, and runs, and the wolf catches them, and scatters the sheep. The hired servant runs, because he is an hired servant, and cares not for the sheep.

I am that good shepherd, and know mine, and am known of mine. As my father knows me: even so know I my father. And I give my life for the sheep: and other sheep I have, which are not of this fold. Them also must I bring, that they may hear my voice, and that there may be one flock and one shepherd. Therefore my father loves me, because I put my life from me, that I might take it again. No man takes it from me: but I put it away of myself. I have power to put it from me, and have power to take it again: This commandment have I received of my father.

And again there was a dissension among the Jews for these sayings, and many of them said. He has the devil, and is mad: why do you listen to him? Other said, these are not the words of him that has the devil. Can the devil open the eyes of the blind?

And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter: and Jesus walked in Solomon’s porch. Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him: How long do you make us doubt? If you be Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus answered them: I told you and you believe not. The works that I do in my fathers name, they bear witness of me. But you believe not, because you are not of my sheep. As I said unto you: my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me, and I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My father which gave them me, is greater then all and no man is able to take them out of my fathers hand. And I and my father are one.

Then the Jews again took up stones, to stone him with all. Jesus said to them: many good works have I showed you from my father: for which of them will you stone me? The Jews answered him saying. We stone you not for your good works sake: but for your blasphemy, and because that you being a man, make yourself God. Jesus answered them: Is it not written in your law: I say, you are Gods? If he called them Gods unto whom the word of God was spoken (and the scripture cannot be broken) do you then say to him, whom the father has sanctified, and sent into the world, you blaspheme, because I said I am the son of God? If I do not the works of my father, believe me not. But if I do, though you believe not me, yet believe the works, that you may know and believe that the father is in me, and I in him.

Again they went about to take him: but he escaped out of their hands, and went away again beyond Jordan, into the place where John before had baptized, and there he abode. And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spoke of this man, are true. And many believed on him there.

The 11th Chapter

A certain man was sick, named Lazarus of Bethany the town of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary which anointed Jesus with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick, and his sisters sent unto him saying. Lord behold he whom you love, is sick. When Jesus heard that, he said: This infirmity is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the son of God might be praised by reason of it. Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. After he heard that he was sick, then he abode two days still in the same place.

Then after that he said to his disciples: let us go again into Judea. His disciples said unto him: Master, the Jews lately sought means to stone you, and will you go there again? Jesus answered, are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him. After that, he said unto them: our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go to wake him out of sleep. Then his disciples said: Lord if he sleep, he shall do well. How be it Jesus spoke of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of the natural sleep. Then Jesus said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead, and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let us go unto him. Then Thomas which is called Didymus said unto the disciples: Let us also go that we may die with him.

Then Jesus went and found that he already had lain in his grave four days. Bethany was near unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off, and many of the Jews were come to Mary and Martha to comfort them over their brother. As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him but Mary sat still in the house.

Then said Martha unto Jesus: Lord if you had been here, my brother had not been dead: but nevertheless, I know that whatsoever you ask of God, God will give it you. Jesus said unto her: your brother shall rise again. Martha said unto him: I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her: I am the resurrection and the life: He that believes on me, yea though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever lives and believes on me, shall never die. Do you believe this? She said unto him: yes Lord, I believe that you are Christ the son of God which should come into the world.

And as soon as she had said, she went her way and called Mary her sister secretly saying: The master is come and calls for you. And as soon as Mary heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but was in the place where Martha met him. Now the Jews which were comforting Mary in the house, when they saw Mary rise and go out hastily, followed her saying: She goes unto the grave, to weep there.

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him: Lord if you had been here, my brother had not died. When Jesus saw her weep, and the Jews also weep, which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled in himself and said: Where have you laid him? They said unto him: Lord come and see. And Jesus wept. Then said the Jews: Behold how he loved him. And some of them said: could not he which opened the eyes of the blind, have also made that this man should not have died? Jesus again groaned in himself, and came to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone laid on it.

And Jesus said: take away the stone. Martha the sister of him that was dead, said unto him: Lord by this time he stinks. For he has been dead four days: Jesus said unto her: Didn’t I say unto you that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God. Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father I thank you because that you have heard me. I know that you always hear me. Yet, I say this for the people that stand by, so that they may also believe that you have sent me.

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus come forth. Then he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave bonds, and his face was bound with a napkin. Jesus said unto them: loose him, and let him go. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus had done.

Then the high Priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said: what shall we do? This man does many miracles. If we let him continue all men will believe on him, and the Romans shall come and take away our country and the people. And one of them named Caiaphas which was the high priest that same year, said unto them: you perceive nothing at all nor yet consider that it is expedient for us, that one man die for the people, and not that all the people perish. This spoke he not of himself, but being high Priest that same year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the people, and not for the people only, but that he should gather together in one the children of God which were scattered abroad. From that day forth they held a counsel together, for to put him to death.

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews: but went his way from that place unto a country near to a wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. And the Jews Passover was near at hand and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. Then they sought for Jesus, and spoke between themselves as they stood in the temple: What think ye, seeing he comes not to the feast? The high Priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he were, he should show it, that they might take him.

The 12th Chapter

Then, six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, which was dead and whom Jesus raised from death. There they made him a supper, and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then Mary took a pound of ointment called Spikenard, perfect and precious, and anointed Jesus feet, and wiped his feet with her hair and the house was filled of the savour of the ointment.

Then said one of his disciples named Judas Iscariot Simon’s son, which afterward betrayed him: why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor: but because he was a thief, and kept the bag, and bare that which was given. Then Jesus said: Let her alone, against the day of my burying she did this. The poor always shall you have with you, but me shall you not always have.

Many of the Jews had knowledge that he was there. And they came, not for Jesus sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also whom he raised from death. The high Priests therefore held a council that they might put Lazarus to death also, because that for his sake many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

On the morrow, many people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus should come to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went and met him, and cried: Hosanna, blessed is he that in the name of the Lord, comes king of Israel. And Jesus got a young ass and sat thereon, according to that which was written: fear not daughter of Sion, behold your king comes sitting on an ass’ colt. These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that such things were written of him, and that such things they had done unto him. The people that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from death, bare record. Therefore he met the people, because they heard that he had done such a miracle. The Pharisees therefore said among themselves do you perceive how that we prevail in nothing? Behold the world goes away after him.

There were certain Greeks among them, that came to pray at the feast: the same came to Philip which was of Bethsaida a city in Galilee, and desired him saying: Sir we would see Jesus. Philip came and told Andrew. And again Andrew and Philip told Jesus. And Jesus answered them saying: the hour is come that the son of man must be glorified.

Truly, truly I say unto you, except the wheat corn fall into the ground and die, it abides alone. If it die, it brings forth much fruit. He that loves his life shall destroy it: and he that hates his life in this world, shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man minister unto me, let him follow me and where I am there shall also my minister be. And if any man ministers unto me, him will my father honour.

Now is my soul troubled, and what shall I say? Father deliver me from this hour: but for this came I unto this hour. Father glorify your name. Then there came a voice from heaven: I have glorified it and will glorify it again. Then the people that stood by and heard said: it thunders. Other said an angel spoke to him. Jesus answered and said: this voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And if I shall be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. This said Jesus, signifying what death he should die. The people answered him: We have heard out of the law that Christ lives forever and how do you then say that the son of man must be lifted up? Who is that son of man? Then Jesus said unto them: the light is with you yet a little while. Walk while you have light, least the darkness come on you. He that walks in the dark, knows not whither he goes. While you have light believe on the light, that you may be the children of light.

These things spoke Jesus and departed, and hid himself from them. And though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him, that the saying of Isaiah the Prophet might be fulfilled, that he spoke.

Lord who shall believe our saying? And to whom is the arm of the Lord opened? Therefore they could not believe, because that Isaiah says again: He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, that they should not see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Such things said Isaiah when he saw his glory, and spoke of him. Nevertheless among the chief rulers many believed on him. But because of the Pharisees they would not let it be known, least they should be put out of their religion. For they loved the praise that is given of men, more than the praise that comes of God.

And Jesus cried and said: he that believes on me, believes not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that sees me, sees him that sent me. I am come a light into the world that whosoever believes on me, should not hide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not. For I came not to judge the world: but to save the world. He that refuses me and receives not my words, has one that judges him. The words that I have spoken, they shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself. The father which sent me, he gave me a commandment what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that this commandment is life everlasting. Whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the father bade me, so I speak.

The 13th Chapter

Before the feast of Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the father: Having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

And when supper was ended, after that the devil had put in the heart of Judas Iscariot Simon’s son, to betray him: Jesus knowing that the father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God: he rose from supper, and laid aside his upper garments, and took a towel, and gird himself. After that, poured he water into a basin, and began to wash his disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel, wherewith he was gird.

Then came he to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him: Lord shall you wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him: what I do, you know not now, but you shall know hereafter. Peter said unto him: you shall not wash my feet while the world stands. Jesus answered him: if I wash you not, you shall have no part with me. Simon Peter said unto him: Lord, not my feet only: but also my hands and my head. Jesus said to him: he that is washed, needs not but to wash his feet, and is clean every bit. And you are clean: but not all. For he knew his betrayer. Therefore he said: you are not all clean.

After he had washed their feet, and received his clothes, and was set down again, he said unto them: Do you know what I have done to you? You call me master and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then your Lord and master have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Truly, truly I say unto you, the servant is not greater than his master, neither the messenger greater than he that sent him.

If you understand these things, happy are you if you do them. I speak not of you all, I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture be fulfilled: he that eats bread with me, has lifted up his heel against me. Now I tell you before it comes: that when it is come to pass you might believe that I am he. Truly, truly I say unto you. He that receives whomsoever I send, receives me. And he that receives me, receives him that sent me.

When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in the spirit, and testified saying: Truly, truly I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And then the disciples looked one on another doubting of whom he spoke. There was one of his disciples, which leaned on Jesus bosom, whom Jesus loved. To him beckoned Simon Peter that he should ask who it was of whom he spoke. He then as he leaned on Jesus breast, said unto him: Lord who is it? Jesus answered, he it is to whom I give a sop, when I have dipped it. And he wet a sop, and gave it to Judas Iscariot Simon’s son. And after the sop, Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him: that you do, do quickly. For what intent he spoke unto him, that knew no man at the table. Some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, buy those things that we have need of for the feast: or that he should give something to the poor.

As soon then as he had received the sop, he immediately went out and it was night. When he was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the son of man glorified. And God is glorified by him. If God be glorified by him, God shall also glorify him in himself: and shall straightway glorify him.

Dear children, yet a little while am I with you. you shall seek me, and as I said unto the Jews, whither I go, over there can you not come. Also to you say I now: A new commandment give I unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you, that even so you love one another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you shall have love one to another. Simon Peter said unto him: Lord whither go you? Jesus answered him: whither I go you can not follow me now, but you shall follow me afterwards.

Peter said unto him: Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will give my life for your sake? Jesus answered him: will you give your life for my sake? Truly, truly I say unto you, the cock shall not crow, till you have denied me three times.

The 14th Chapter

And he said unto his disciples: Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, and believe in me. In my fathers house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself that where I am, there you may be also. And whither I go you know, and the way you know.

Thomas said unto him: Lord we know not whither you go. Also how is it possible for us to know the way? Jesus said unto him: I am the way, the truth and the life. And no man comes unto the father, but by me. If you had known me, you had known my father also. And now you know him, and have seen him.

Philip said unto him: Lord show us the father and it suffices us. Jesus said unto him, have I been so long time with you: and yet have you not known me? Philip, he that has seen me, has seen the father. And how say you then: show us the father? Believe you not that I am in the father, and the father in me? The words that I speak unto you, I speak not of myself: but the father that dwells in me, is he that does the works. Believe me, that I am in the father and the father in me. At the least believe me for the very works sake.

Truly, truly I say unto you, he that believes on me, the works that I do, the same shall he do, and greater works then these shall he do, because I go unto my father. And whatsoever you ask in my name, that will I do, that the father might be glorified by the son. If you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

If you love me keep my commandments, and I will pray the father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever: which is the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive, because the world sees him not, neither knows him. But you know him. For he dwells with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: but will come to you.

Yet a little while and the world sees me no more: but you shall see me. For I live and you shall live. That day shall you know that I am in my father, and you in me, and I in you.

He that has my commandments and keeps them, the same is he that loves me. And he that loves me shall be loved of my father: and I will love him, and will show mine own self unto him. Judas said unto him (not Judas Iscariot) Lord what is the cause that you will show yourself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him: If a man love me and will keep my sayings, my father also will love him, and we will come unto him, and will dwell with him. He that loves me not, keeps not my sayings. And the words which you hear, are not mine, but the fathers which sent me.

This have I spoken unto you being yet present with you. But that comforter which is the Holy Ghost (whom my father will send in my name) he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I have told you.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. Not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your hearts be grieved, neither fear ye. You have heard how I said unto you: I go and come again unto you. If you loved me, you would truly rejoice, because I said, I go unto the father. For the father is greater then I. And now have I showed you, before it come, that when it is come to pass, you might believe. Here after will I not talk many words unto you. For the ruler of this world comes, and has nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the father: therefore as the father gave me commandment, even so do I. Rise, let us now go from here.

The 15th Chapter

I am the true vine, and my father is an husbandmen. Every branch that bears not fruit in me, he will take away. And every branch that bears fruit, will he purge, that it may bring more fruit. Now are you clean through the words which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and let me abide in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine: no more can you except you abide in me. I am the vine, and you are the branches. He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit. For without me you can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered: and men gather it and cast it into the fire, and it burns. If you abide in me and my words also bide in you: ask what you will, and it shall be done to you.

Herein is my father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and be made my disciples. As the father has loved me, even so have I loved you. Continue in my love. If you shall keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my fathers commandments, and bide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

This is my commandment, that you love together as I have loved you. Greater love than this has no man, than that a man gives his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do whatsoever I command you. From this time I call you not servants: for the servant knows not what his lord does. But you have I called friends: for all things that I have heard of my father I have opened to you.

You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you, that you go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit remain, that whatsoever you shall ask of the father in my name, he should give it you.

This command I you, that you love one another. If the world hate you, you know that he hated me before he hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love his own. How be it because you are not of the world, I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the saying that I said unto you: the servant is not greater than the Lord. If they have persecuted me, so will they persecute you. If they have kept my sayings, so will they keep yours.

But all these things will they do unto you for my names sake, because they have not known him that sent me. If I had not come and spoken unto them they should not have had sin: but now have they nothing with all to cloak their sin. He that hates me, hates my father. If I had not done works among them which none other man did, they had not had sin. But now have they seen, and yet have hated both me and my father: even that the saying might be fulfilled that is written in their law: they hated me without a cause.

But when the comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the father, which is the spirit of truth, which proceeds of the father, he shall testify of me. And you shall bear witness also, because you have been with me from the beginning.

The 16th Chapter

These things have I said unto you, so that you should not be offended. They shall put you out. The time shall come that whosoever kills you, will think that he does God a service. And such things will they do unto you, because they have not known the father neither yet me. But these things have I told you, that when that hour is come, you might then remember, that I told you so. These things said I not unto you at the beginning because I was present with you.

But now I go my way to him that sent me, and none of you asks me: whither do you go? But because I have said such things unto you, your hearts are full of sorrow. Nevertheless I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away. For if I go not away, that comforter will not come unto you. But if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. Of sin, because they believe not on me: of righteousness, because I go to my father, and you shall see me no more: and of judgment, because the chief ruler of this world, is judged already.

I have yet many things to say unto you: but you cannot bear them now. How be it when he is come (I mean the spirit of truth) he will lead you into all truth. He shall not speak of himself: but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak, and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall show unto you. All things that the father has are mine. Therefore said I unto you, that he shall take of mine and show unto you.

After a while you shall not see me, and again after a while you shall see me: For I go to the father. Then said some of his disciples between themselves: what is this that he says unto us, after a while you shall not see me, and again after a while you shall see me: and that I go to the father. They said therefore: what is this that he says after a while? We cannot tell what he says.

Jesus perceived that they would ask him, and said unto them: This is it that you inquire of between yourselves, that I said after a while you shall not see me, and again after a while you shall see me. Truly, truly I say unto you: you shall weep and lament and the world shall rejoice. You shall sorrow: but your sorrow shall be turned to joy.

A woman when she travails has sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembers no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And you now are in sorrow: but I will see you again, and your hearts shall rejoice, and your joy shall no man take from you. And in that day shall you ask me no question. Truly, truly I say unto you, whatsoever you shall ask the father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have you asked nothing in my name. Ask and you shall receive it: that your joy may be full.

These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs. The time will come when I shall no more speak to you in proverbs: but I shall show you plainly from my father. At that day shall you ask in mine name. And I say not unto you that I will speak unto my father for you. For the father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I went out from the father, and came into the world: and I leave the world again, and go to the father.

His disciples said unto him: Lo now you speak plainly and you use no proverb. Now we know that you understand all things, and need not that any man should ask you any question. Therefore, we believe that you came from God. Jesus answered them: Now you do believe. Behold the hour draws nigh, and is already come that you shall be scattered every man his ways, and shall leave me alone. And yet am I not alone. For the father is with me.

These words have I spoken unto you, that in me you might have peace. For in the world shall you have tribulation: but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

The 17th Chapter

These words spoke Jesus and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said: father the hour is come: glorify your son, that your son may glorify you: as you have given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as you have given him. This is life eternal, that they might know you that only very God, and whom you have sent Jesus Christ.

I have glorified you on the earth. I have finished the work which you gave me to do. And now father glorify me with your own self, with the glory which I had with you before the world was. I have declared your name unto the men, which you gave me out of the world. Yours they were and you gave them to me, and they have kept your sayings. Now they know that all things whatsoever you have given me, are of you. For I have given unto them the words which you gave me, and they have received them, and know surely that I came out from you: and do believe that you did send me.

I pray for them, and pray not for the world: but for them, which you have given me, for they are yours. And all of mine are yours, and your are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now am I no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I come to you. Holy father keep in your own name, them which you have given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name. Those that you gave me, have I kept, and none of them is lost, but that lost child, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

Now I come to you, and these words I speak in the world, that they might have my joy full in them. I have given them your words, and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I desire not that you should take them out of the world: but that you keep them from evil. They are not of the world, as I am not of the world. Sanctify them with your truth, your word is truth. As you did sent me in to the world, even so have I sent them into the world, and for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

I pray not for them alone: but for them also which shall believe on me through their preaching, that they all may be one, as you father are in me, and I in you, that they may be also one in us, that the world may believe that you have sent me. And that glory that you gave me, I have given them, that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that you have sent me, and have loved them, as you have loved me.

Father, I will that they which you have given me, be with me where I am, that they may see my glory which you have given me. For you loved me before the making of the world. O' righteous father, the very world has not known you: but I have known you, and these have known that you have sent me. And I have declared unto them your name, and will declare it, that the love wherewith you have loved me, may be in them, and that I may be in them.

The 18th Chapter

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden into the which he entered with his disciples. Judas also which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus often times resorted there with his disciples. Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus knowing all things that should come on him, went forth and said unto them: Whom seek ye? They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them: I am he. Judas also which betrayed him, stood with them. But as soon as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backwards and fell to the ground. And he asked them again: whom seek ye? They said: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered: I said unto you, I am he. If you seek me, let these go their way. That the saying might be fulfilled which he spoke: of them that you gave me, I have not lost one.

Simon Peter had a sword, and drew it, and smote the high priests servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. Then said Jesus unto Peter: put up your sword into the sheath: shall I not drink of the cup, which my father has given me. Then the company and the Captain, and the stewards of the Jews took Jesus and bound him, and led him away to Annas first: For he was father in law unto Caiaphas which was the high Priest that same year. Caiaphas was he that gave counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

And Simon Peter followed Jesus and another disciple: that disciple was known of the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high Priest. But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple which was known unto the high priest, and spoke to the damsel that kept the door, and brought in Peter. Then said the damsel that kept the door, unto Peter: are not you one of this mans disciples? He said: I am not. The servants and the stewards stood there, and had made a fire of coals: for it was cold and they warmed themselves. Peter also stood among them and warmed himself.

The high priest asked Jesus of his disciples and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him: I spoke openly in the world. I always taught in the Synagogue and in the temple whither all the Jews resorted, and in secret have I said nothing: Why do you ask me? Ask what I said unto them which heard me. Behold they can tell what I said.

When he had thus spoken, one of the stewards which stood by, smote Jesus on the face saying: answer you the high priest so? Jesus answered him. If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: if I have spoken honestly, why do you smite me? And Annas sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. And they said unto him: are not you also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not. One of the servants of the high priest (his cousin whose ear Peter smote off) said unto him: did not I see you in the garden with him? Peter denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the hall of judgment. It was in the morning, and they themselves went not into the judgment hall least they should be defiled, and so that they might eat the Passover lamb. Pilate then went out unto them and said: what accusation do you bring against this man? They answered and said unto him. If he were not an evil doer we would not have delivered him unto you. Then Pilate said unto them: take him and judge him after your own law. Then the Jews said unto him. It is not lawful for us to put any man to death. That the words of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.

Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him: are you the king of the Jews? Jesus answered: Do you say that of yourself, or did others tell it you of me? Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Your own nation and high priests have delivered you unto me. What have you done? Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world then would my servants surely fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews, but now my kingdom is not from here.

Pilate said unto him: are you a king then? Jesus answered: You say that I am a king. For this cause was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. And all that are of the truth hear my voice. Pilate said unto him: What is truth? And when he had said that, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them: I find in him no cause at all. You have a custom, that I should deliver you one loose at Passover. Will you that I loose unto you the king of the Jews? Then cried they all again saying: Not him but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

The 19th Chapter

Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. And the soldiers wound a crown of thorns and put it on his head. And they did on him a purple garment, and said: hail king of the Jews: and they smote him on the face. Pilate went forth again and said unto them: behold I bring him forth to you, that you may know, that I find no fault in him. Then came Jesus forth wearing a crown of thorns and a robe of purple. And Pilate said unto them: behold the man. When the high Priests and stewards saw him, they cried saying: crucify him, crucify him. Pilate said unto them. You take him and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. The Jews answered him. We have a law, and by our law he ought to die: because he made himself the son of God. When Pilate heard that saying he was the more afraid, and went again into the judgment hall, and said unto Jesus: from where are you? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then said Pilate unto him: Do you not answer me? Do you not know that I have power to crucify you and I have power to loose you? Jesus answered: You could have no power at all against me, except it were given you from above. Therefore he that delivered me unto you, is more in sin. And from that time forth Pilate sought means to loose him: but the Jews cried saying: if you let him go you are not Caesars friend. For whosoever makes himself a king is against Caesar.

When Pilate heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down to give sentence, in a place called the pavement: but in the Hebrew tongue, Gabbatha. It was the Sabbath evening which falls in the Passover feast, and about the sixth hour. And he said unto the Jews: behold your king. They cried, away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said unto them shall I crucify your king? The high priests answered: we have no king but Caesar. Then he delivered him unto them, to be crucified.

And they took Jesus, and led him away. And he bare his cross, and went forth into a place called the place of dead men’s skulls, which is named in Hebrew, Golgotha. Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote his title, and put it on the cross. The writing was: Jesus of Nazareth king of the Jews. This title read many of the Jews. For the place where Jesus was crucified, was near to the city. And it was written in Hebrew, Creek and Latin. Then said the high priests of the Jews to Pilate: write not king of the Jews, but that he said I am king of the Jews. Pilate answered: what I have written, that have I written.

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part, and also his coat. The coat was without seam, wrought upon throughout. And they said one to another. Let us not divide it, but cast lots who shall have it. That the scripture might be fulfilled which says. They parted my raiment among them, and on my coat did cast lots. And the soldiers did such things indeed.

There stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple standing, whom he loved, he said unto his mother: woman behold your son. Then he said to the disciple: behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her for his own.

After that when Jesus perceived that all things were performed: that the scripture might be fulfilled: he said: I thirst. There stood a vessel full of vinegar by. And they filled a sponge with vinegar, and wound it about with hyssop, and put it to his mouth. As soon as Jesus had received of the vinegar, he said: It is finished, and bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

The Jews then because it was the Sabbath evening, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day (for that Sabbath day was an high day) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken down. Then the came soldiers and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already they brake not his legs: but one of the soldiers with a spear, thrust him into the side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

And he that saw it, bare record, and his record is true. And he knows that he says true, that you might believe also. These things were done that the scripture should be fulfilled. you shall not break a bone of him. And again another scripture says: They shall look on him, whom they pierced. After that, Joseph of Arimathia (which was a disciple of Jesus: but secretly for fear of the Jews) besought Pilate that he might take down the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave him license. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the beginning came to Jesus by night, and brought of myrrh and aloes mingled together about the weight of a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen clothes with the odors, as is the manner of the Jews. And in the place where Jesus was crucified, was a garden, and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man laid. There laid they Jesus because of the Jew’s Sabbath evening, for the sepulchre was near at hand.

The 20th Chapter

The day after the Sabbath day, came Mary Magdalene early unto the sepulchre, when it was yet dark, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said unto them. They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we cannot tell where they have laid him. Peter and that other disciple went forth and came unto the sepulchre. They both ran together and that other disciple out ran Peter and came first to the sepulchre. And he stooped down and saw the linen clothes lying, yet went not in. Then Simon Peter came following him and went into the sepulchre and saw the linen clothes lie, and the napkin that was about his head, not lying with the linen cloth, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then that other disciple which first came to the sepulchre went in also, and he saw and believed. For as yet they knew not the scriptures that he should rise again from death. And the disciples went away again unto their own home.

Mary stood outside the sepulchre weeping. And as she wept, she bowed herself into the sepulchre and saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head and the other at the feet, where they had laid the body of Jesus. And they said unto her: woman why do you weep? She said unto them: Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. When she had thus said, she turned herself back and saw Jesus standing and knew not that it was him. Jesus said unto her: woman why do you weep? Whom do you seek? She supposing that he had been the gardener said unto him. Sir if you have carried him from here, now tell me where you have laid him, that I may fetch him. Jesus said unto her: Mary. She turned herself, and said unto him: Rabboni, which is to say master. Jesus said unto her, touch me not, for I am not yet ascended to my father. But go to my brethren and say unto them, I ascend unto my father and your father: to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken such things unto her.

That same evening, which was the day after the Sabbath, the disciples were assembled together for fear of the Jews and the doors were shut. Then Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them: peace be with you. And when he had so spoken, he showed them his hands, and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again: peace be with you. As my father sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said that, he breathed on them and said unto them: Receive the Holy Ghost. Whosoevers sins you remit they are remitted unto them. And whosoevers sins you retain, they are retained.

But Thomas one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples said unto him: we have seen the Lord. And he said unto them: except I see in his hands the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days again his disciples were with in, and Thomas with them. Then Jesus came when the doors were shut, and stood in the midst and said: peace be with you.

After that he said to Thomas: bring your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and thrust it into my side, and be not faithless, but believing. Thomas answered and said unto him: my Lord, and my God. Jesus said unto him: Thomas, because you have seen me, therefore you believe: Happy are they that have not seen, and yet believe.

And many other signs did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. These are written that you might believe, that Jesus is Christ the Son of God, and that in believing you might have life through his name.

The 21st Chapter

After that Jesus showed himself again, at the sea of Tiberias. And on this wise he showed himself. There were together Simon Peter and Thomas, which are called Didymus: and Nathanael of Cana a city of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of the disciples. Simon Peter said unto them: I go a fishing. They said unto him: we also will go with you. They went their way and entered into a ship straight way, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: nevertheless the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus said unto them: Sirs, have you any meat? They answered him, no. And he said unto them: cast out the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find. They cast out, and after a while they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said unto Peter: It is the Lord. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girded his mantle to him (for he was naked) and sprang into the sea. The other disciples came by ship for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits, and they drew the net with fishes. As soon as they were come to land, they saw hot coals and fish laid thereon, and bread. Jesus said unto them: bring of the fish, which you have now caught. Simon Peter stepped forth and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty three. And for all there were so many, yet the net was not broken. Jesus said unto them: come and dine. And none of the disciples dare ask him: who are you? For they knew that it was the Lord. Jesus then came and took bread, and gave them, and fish likewise. And this is now the third time that Jesus appeared to his disciples, after that he was risen from death.

When they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter: Simon Joanna, do you love me more than these? He said unto him: Lord you know, that I love you. He said unto him: feed my lambs. He said to him again the second time: Simon Joanna, do you love me? He said unto him: Lord you know that I love you. He said unto him: feed my sheep. He said unto him the third time: Simon Joanna, do you love me? And Peter sorrowed because he said to him the third time, do you love me, and said unto him: Lord you know all things, you know that I love you. Jesus said unto him: feed my sheep.

Truly, truly I say unto you, when you were young, you girded yourself, and walked where ever you would: but when you are old, you shall stretch forth your hands, and another shall gird you, and lead you whither you would not. That spoke he signifying by what death he should glorify God.

And when he had said thus, he said to him follow me. Peter turned about, and saw that disciple (John) whom Jesus loved following: which also leaned on his breast at supper and said: Lord which is he that shall betray you? When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus: Lord what shall he here do? Jesus said unto him: If I will have him (Judas) to tarry till I come, what is that to you? Follow me. Then this saying went abroad among the brethren, that this disciple (the betrayer) should not die. Yet Jesus said not to him, he shall not die: but if I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to you?

The same disciple is he, (John) which testifies of these things, and wrote these things. And we know, that his testimony is true. There are also many other things which Jesus did the which if they should be written every one I suppose the world could not contain the books that should be written.

Here ends the Gospel of Saint John
